Photograph - Susan Ellis (nee Hehir) - Women's History Month - Fearless Females - March 2

In honor of National Women’s History Month in the USA, Lisa Alzo of The Accidental Genealogist blog is presenting Fearless Females: 31 Blogging Prompts to Celebrate Women’s History Month.

March 2 — Post a photo of one of your female ancestors. Who is in the photo? When was it taken? Why did you select this photo?

Who is in the photo? This is a photograph of my Great Great Grandmother, Susan Josephine Ellis (nee Hehir). Susan, the daughter of Timothy Hehir and Ann McMahon, was born c1833 at Killow, Clareabbey, County Clare, Ireland. Her siblings included:  Bridget (b. c1832, immigrated to NSW and married Thomas Farrell), Elizabeth (b. c1835), John (b c1836, immigrated to Victoria, married Sarah McLernon), Michael (b. c1839 - went to USA?), Honora (b. c1841), Thomas (b. c1844 - went to USA?) and Anna Maria (b. c1845 , immigrated to Victoria, married John Kinsella)

When was it taken? c1880s.

Why did you select this photo? I chose this photograph because it is one of my favourites. Susan looks beautiful, despite the difficulties that I know she faced in the course of her life: the famine in Ireland in which her mother died, the voyage to Australia, working as a servant in Melbourne, living on the gold diggings in central Victoria. She was a diligent and courageous woman, and a loving wife and devoted mother of seven children. Susan lived to be 87 years of age.
